Can Parakeets Eat Cinnamon?
Parakeets, or budgerigars, are small birds native to Australia. They are popular pets due to their cheery personalities and beautiful colors. Like all pet birds, they require a balanced diet with plenty of protein and vitamins in order to stay healthy. But can parakeets eat cinnamon?
The Answer: Yes!
Yes, parakeets can eat cinnamon safely in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Cinnamon is not toxic for parakeets but it should be used sparingly as an occasional treat only. Additionally, the type of cinnamon you feed your bird should only be true Ceylon cinnamon (also known as “real” or “true” cinnamon). Cassia (or Chinese) cinnamon is not the same and has been found to contain higher levels of coumarin which can be dangerous for birds in large doses over time.
Benefits Of Feeding Cinnamon To Parakeets
Cinnamon is packed full of antioxidants that help boost immunity and fight disease. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels which may benefit diabetic birds, aids digestion by maintaining gut flora balance, relieves joint pain caused by arthritis due to its anti-inflammatory properties, prevents bacterial growth on wounds or skin infections thanks to its antiseptic abilities and can even freshen breath when fed in small amounts!
